Letterboxing anthem?

From: TrailTroll (kanderson@american-community.com) | Date: 2007-01-02 13:30:34 UTC
I'm in a postal ring celebrating Rock and Roll Legends, and the
latest PLB is for R.E.M. It includes a song that should be the new
anthem for letterboxers everywhere:

STAND - by R.E.M.
=================
"Stand in the place where you live
Now face north
Think about direction
Wonder why you haven't before
Now stand in the place where you work
Now face west
Think about the place where you live
Wonder why you haven't before

If you are confused check with the sun
Carry a compass to help you along
Your feet are going to be on the ground
Your head is there to move you around."

Can anybody think of other songs that are somehow letterboxing
appropriate?

Into the woods
Without delay,
But careful not
To lose the way.
Into the woods,
Who knows what may
Be lurking on the journey?
Into the woods
To get the thing
That makes it worth
The journeying....

Into the woods!
Into the woods,
Then out of the woods,
And home before dark!

(Stephen Sondheim)

Our Favorite:

well we know where we're going, but we dont know where we've been
and we know what we're knowing, but we can't say what we've seen
and we're not little children, and we know what we want
and the future is certain, give us time to work it out

yeah

we're on a road to nowhere, come on inside
we'll take that ride to nowhere, we'll take that ride
feeling ok this morning, and you know
we're on a road to find our lives, here we go, here we go

we're on a ride to nowhere, come on inside
taking that ride to nowhere, we'll take that ride
maybe you want me while i'm here, i dont care
even when time isnt on our side, i'll take you there, take you there

we're on a road to nowhere
we're on a road to nowhere
we're on a road to nowhere

there's a city in my mind so come on and take the ride, and its
alright, baby its alright
and its very far away, but its going day by day and its alright,
baby its alright
would you like to come along? you can help me sing this song and its
alright, baby its alright
they can tell you what to do, oh god they'll make a fool of you, and
its alright, baby its alright

we're on a road to nowhere
we're on a road to nowhere
we're on a road to nowhere
we're on a road to nowhere

Yes, one of the other letterboxing groups is truing to put together a cd of letterboxing music. Stand was the first choice for me and several others. So appropriate...and happy too!

I think it should be the theme to ROCKY. After all, it's a movie
about a boxer.

Anybody else have a boxing day like this one?...Mommo

I see the bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin.
I see bad times today.

Chorus:
Dont go around tonight,
Well, its bound to take your life,
Theres a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes ablowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Chorus
All right!

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like were in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

This is just briliant!

When my kids were young we would stand in the living room dancing to
this music, jumping from compass point to compass point. This was
before boxing. I can't believe I never thought of it afterwards.

I am still a big fan of R.E.M.'s Radio Free Europe', and 'Gardening
at Night'.

Into The Woods!
The last year I taught middle school, the drama
department performed that musical in the Spring. It
was so much fun.

I had forgotten all about that song. Thanks for
reminding me. I'm sure I'll be signing it on the trail soon.

I usually don't go out on those days. Stay inside & carve! =)

Yes, I have. Now I check the weather report a bit more carefully
before I go out.

There's a wacky little song by They Might be Giants called "letterbox".....
Here are the lyrics... The first line is great! The rest is open to
interpretation as to whether it's an appropriate anthem!

I'll never know what you'll find when you open up your letter box tomorrow
'cause a little bird never tells me anything I want to know, she's my best
Friend, she's a sparrow
And I'll never never know what you never never never want to know when you know
What you are, o.

If I had a pair of eyes on the back of my head for each time
You forgot to take out all the things you forgot to talk about when you took a
Bite out of my spine,
I would have a lot of eyes on the other side, wouldn't i? wouldn't that just be
Fine.

Too late or soon to make noise about love and there's no time for sorrow
Run around in the rain with a hole in the brain till tomorrow

I'll never know what you'll find when you open up your letter box tomorrow
'cause a little bird never tells me anything I want to know, she's my best
Friend, she's a sparrow
And I'll never never know what you never never never want to know when you know
What you are, o.

There ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no river wide enough

I can't believe I didn't think of this one - I have a box
entitled "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"! I made it for the "Mo Boxin'
in Motown" gathering and then moved it to Bald Mountain (southeast
Michigan). Another perfect song for letterboxing!

Trail Troll,

Yesterday was my first attempt at Letterboxing. I went with an experienced friend and we did your "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."  It was fun and I did find it. I thought I would let you know that I put your items in a new Ziploc back as the one it was in had a large hole in it and everything was very damp. Thanks for doing this one - it was a fun first time out.

I have done geocaching before but I don't have a GPS and was with a friend who did.  I am hoping to do some letterboxing with my grandchildren in Ohio.
